Nancy Bucy - (Clarinet, Sax, and Piano) - Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays
Music instruction with Nancy Bucy will take you far beyond the realm of standard lessons. You will learn at your own pace while having fun. Nancy will instruct on music reading, theory, ear training, sight reading, playing by ear, and more. Nancy has 19 years of teaching for public schools as a music teacher and a band director. Nancy has also been teaching as a private instructor for 25 years. She has 18 years of being an orchestral clarinetist including four years as a principal clarinetist. Nancy has had experience as a pit orchestra and studio recording musician. Nancy has performed twice for The Moody Blues orchestra as the clarinetist. She is currently performing with Journey West and Sentimental Journey. She also performs as the pianist and clarinetist for Grace Community Church. Nancy students have achieved top seats in Elementary, Jr. High, and High School honor bands along with regionals and All-States.
Lyle Cady - (Beg. Bass and all levels of Guitar) - Tuesdays and Wednesdays
Lyle is a state certified music teacher with nearly a decade of teaching experience. His formal music education began in High School where he studied classical guitar at two nationally recognized art schools. He then continued this music training at Arizona State University, where he is currently attending on working to get his masters degree in music education. Lyle has recorded over a dozen original albums, three of which where created alongside a former student. Lyle's experience and love for all aspects of music make him an ideal choice for a music instructor.
Duncan Kunz - (Banjo) - Tuesdays
Duncan has been playing and teaching guitar and five-string banjo for forty years, ten in the Washington D.C. area, and the past thirty years in the East Valley. While in High School Duncan studied classical guitar with Sophocles Pappas, one of Andres Segovia's Master Class alumni; and flamenco with Torquato Zamora of Barcelona. At Prince George's College in Landover, Maryland he studied theory, harmony, counterpoint, and performance. In his early twenties he studied 5-string banjo with Bill Emerson, Country Gentleman, and attended two Master Clinics by Early Scruggs. In addition to doing studio work in both the DC and Phoenix area. He has taught both individual and group lessons in guitar and banjo. Duncan was a former fifth grade teacher in the Prince George's County (Maryland) public schools system. Duncan has also worked for eight years in the Choices Program, a program for Mesa Public Schools junior high schools, which involves presenting class material to 9th graders throughout the East Valley. Duncan plays in two local bluegrass bands, which include the Red Mountain Bluegrass Band here in Mesa and the Desert Ridge Band in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. Four decades of teaching has taught Duncan that most students want to learn while also having fun. Although he draws from a variety of method books, he will customize his lesson plans to each students particular instance, and try to strike a balance among learning in a stress free environment, mastering a wide range of songs and styles, and making sure that the student is having a good time learning!
Jennifer Dock - (Flute) - Saturdays
Jennifer has been playing flute for 30 years. She received her Bachelor of Music in Performance from North Carolina School of Arts in 1991 and her Master of Music from Arizona State University in 1993. She is a member of the Arizona Flute Society and the National Flute Association. Jennifer did several solo recitals in the Mid-Atlantic region in the early 90's. She has done freelancing in North Carolina, which included playing with the Winston Salem Symphony. Locally, she has played with the Mesa Symphony and is currently co-principal flute with the Tempe Symphonic Wind Ensemble, a position she has held for 14 years. Jennifer has been teaching flute since 1989, including 15 years at Milano's in downtown Mesa, 7 years at Eat Valley Music Instruction (closed), and 5 years at Brindleys' Mesa Music location (closed). Jennifer has been an adjudicator for All-State and Regional festivals as well as for the Arizona Flute Society Young Artist Competition. Some honors that Jennifer's students have received are: Arizona Flute Society Competition division winners, Superior with distinction at solo and ensemble festivals, and college scholarships. Her students have also earned spots in the Metropolitan Youth Symphony and routinely make their regional and honor bands. Jennifer's teaching purpose is to help students reach their highest potential in an enivornment of patience and respect.
Charles Liu - (Violin and Viola) - Saturdays
Charles went to the University of Western Ontario and received his bachelors degree in music, theory, and composition. In 2004, he acquired the Helen Mills Instrument Award and in 2006 was a part of the Concert Overture premiered by the U.W.O Symphony Orchestra. From 2007 until 2009, Charles worked as a private music instructor at Merriam School of Music in Oakville, Ontario. At the school he did private music instruction for all ages and for beginner to advanced levels. Along with teaching private lessons for Merriam School of music, he coached the Junior Strings Ensemble. Charles also arranged music for the University of Toronto Schools Music Department. Charles is the co-author and editor of The German Music Anthology music text, and is able to create special instrumental parts on demand. He is an experience performer of violin and viola, and of sheet music arranging and editing. As far as Charles teaching skills, he is able to teach from ages seven and up. He teaches according to Royal Conservatory of Music (National Music Certificate Program) violin, viola, and theory syllabus. Charles teaching skills are meticulous, methodical, and detail-oriented.
