Willy Loon of Camel Country 108's Tim & Willy Show & Jonathan Varo of Buchanan MusicWilly Loon of Camel Country 108's Tim & Willy Show & Jonathan Varo of Buchanan MusicLongtime friend of Buchanan Music, Willy Loon, called me the other day. The Tim & Willy Breakfast Show At Night 20th Anniversary was coming up and he was on the lookout for an acoustic guitar that he would be able to purchase, have signed by Country Music artists and then place on auction during the celebration. The proceeds from the auction will benefit The Tim & Willy Kid's FUNDation.

Always on a lookout for a good cause, I told Willy that we would be happy to donate a Cort CJ5X Super Jumbo acoustic-electric guitar since the proceeds from the auction would go to benefit the Fundation.

We would like to call out to the friends of Buchanan Music to purchase tickets and go enjoy some great entertainment down at the Celebrity Theatre on December 2, 2011. Show starts at 7:30pm.

Taft Elementary Band Director, Emily Schwartz (center) with Buchanan Music's Jonathan Varo and Mary McIntosh.Taft Elementary Band Director, Emily Schwartz (center) with Buchanan Music's Jonathan Varo and Mary McIntosh.Buchanan Music, a local retailer of musical instruments, donated over forty school band method books and materials to the music  program of Taft Elementary School in Mesa.

"It was a no-brainer." said Jonathan Varo, store manager of Buchanan Music. "When I heard that Taft Elementary had the funding for their instruments but not for the books, which are used to teach the students how to play those instruments, we had to help."

Emily Schwartz, band director at Taft Elementary, was only looking for three method books when she called the store.  It was her goal to find books from a local store that were used or marked down.  It was when she called Buchanan Music, to locate those books, that she struck up a conversation with Mr. Varo.

The Day of the Old Music Store Is Over

customer-serviceI have been in this business for over 10 years and love my job. Why do I love it? Because selling gear is fun. Influencing the future musicians of the world is incredible. Making lasting relationships with those musicians is the key to a successful future because they will always remember the cool times they had at the "Music Store". I have a great group of dedicated workers and we have fun, laugh, joke with our well known customers and let our new customers feel right at home.  We do our best to provide an escape for the people who want to visit a cool place to hang.  If someone comes in for a pack of strings or one pick, that's fine with me.  There is no business that I will turn down and every customer is treated equally; no matter what they purchase. Every music store has this opportunity to make great connections with their customers but many fall by the wayside and create a feeling in their customers that is the polar opposite of what I described above.

Sizing Your Child For A Violin or Viola

Sizing Your Child For A Violin or ViolaOne of the most important aspects of renting an orchestral instrument is to make sure that the instrument fits the player.  As such, violins and violas need to be fitted for your child if you are going to be renting one of these instruments.

This article will help you measure your child in the comfort of your own home.

  1. Measure the distance starting at  the side of your child's neck and along the arm to the middle of the palm of his or her hand.  Your child's arm needs to be outstretched for a proper measurement.
  2. You can use a tape measure of yard stick.  Make sure that whatever you are using counts eighths of an inch increments.

What The Amended Lacey Act Means For The Music Industry

A guitar tech refrets a 1968 Martin Guitar with Brazilian rosewood back and sides and then offers it for sale. A guitar manufacturer buys ebony from a reputable broker in good faith, but somewhere between the tree cutting and the delivery, someone who had custody of the wood failed to file a form. A mom and pop retailer has 30 guitars on the store wall, but can’t precisely document the genus and species of woods used in each instrument, let alone where the woods came from. What do these seemingly innocuous scenarios have in common? They are all illegal under Federal Law and could be punishable with immediate confiscation of the instrument in question, not to mention hefty fines and jail time. It’s a sad state of affairs when poorly drafted legislation criminalizes large swaths of an industry that delivers a proven societal benefit, but that’s where we are in 2011. Welcome to the new and improved Lacey Act.
